Draping

These three projects represent my core work from FDM 3250 at Iowa State University. Throughout this course, I built strong foundational draping skills on a dress form, learning how to shape and manipulate fabric to create well‑structured garments. I draped sleeves, bodices, pants, skirts, and dresses, gaining hands‑on experience in translating flat ideas into three‑dimensional forms with intention and precision.

Project #3 Living Inspirtaion

This design was inspired by the organic beauty of wood grain and the mythology of Dryads—wood nymphs from Greek lore. I was drawn to the uniqueness of wood and the natural patterns it creates, as well as the rich texture found in tree bark. I also loved how artists depict Dryads, with wood grain contouring the body in fluid, sculptural lines.

To translate these ideas into my garment, I used cording to create flexible, flowing drapes that mimic the movement of grain. I paired this with a textured poly‑blend fabric that echoes the tactile quality of bark. At the hem, I added four panels of brown chiffon to build volume and evoke the look of tree roots extending into the earth.

Project #2 Structure

This corset represents my first time using the traditional three‑layer method: a fashion fabric, a layer of coutil for structure, and a clean inner lining. I incorporated steel boning along the sides and center to create a strong, supportive silhouette. For the design, I chose a corset with shaped cups and a sharp V‑waist to emphasize contour and precision. The fashion fabric was sourced from a thrifted cotton bedsheet, giving the piece a sustainable element while still providing the structure and aesthetic I wanted.

Project #1 Bias

A minimal‑seam design focused on sculpting a unique silhouette. The adjustable pinned‑up skirt allows customizable shaping, complemented by playful bow details throughout. Short cowl sleeves echo the skirt’s soft drape, creating a cohesive look with movement and personality.
